NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

…………sooooooooooooo…..mmmhhhmmm…what’s the problem with new year’s resolutions????  You know…all those grandiose plans…that this year we will __________________ (fill in the blank)…

…and how many years have we been setting ourselves up for the disappointment of not following through????  How many years have we been creating more reasons for self criticism and self judgement for not keeping those resolutions?

The truth is that when we make these resolutions to radically transform our lives via some heroic efforts, and we keep measuring the distance from where we are to where we want to go…we get so discouraged…(because we don’t really believe we’ll ever get there) that we just give up…Another batch of resolutions fallen by the wayside….

Here’s the missing piece in all this… no matter where we’re going…no matter how long the journey, it can only be made one step at a time.  If we get in our car in NYC, intending to drive to Los Angeles, we understand that we’ll get there one mile at a time…and it’s a LOT of miles…and we’re not going to get there badda-bing-badda-boom…We’ve got days of driving…stops to make…take time to rest…possible bad weather or flat tires to deal with….

Still..if the plan is to start in NYC at 10AM…but we get delayed…does it mean we now have to scrap the whole trip?…we can’t begin the journey at 10:30?  Or…what if the fuel pump blows ten miles out of Amarillo?  That’s it???  Now we spend the rest of of our lives by the side of the road…bemoaning our fate???  It’s too hard…it’s taking too long…Or…we get distracted…we decide to detour and do some sightseeing…UH-OH!!!  …we’re so irresponsible…we deliberately chose this detour…we delayed the trip…Now we can never again point our car in the direction of California and continue???

Same thing with our new year’s resolutions…On December 31st, we vowed to begin ____________ (fill in the blank)…and here it is…January 5th, and we didn’t do it…does that mean we can never begin???  Or…let’s fast forward to an imaginary April 12th…we’ve been moving right along…AND…some glitch comes up (the equivalent of that flat tire or bad fuel pump)…so…there’s an inconvenience…an obstacle…a  delay…  If our objective is to drive to California, we deal with delays and glitches and we keep driving west…we will, sooner or later, get there…

AND…if our objective is to achieve whatever that _______________ (fill in the blank) is…then,  if we got sidetracked or delayed along the way by our habits…or doubts…or circumstances…or whatever…why not just begin again?…point yourself in the direction you want to go and start moving again…pick it up where you left off…Maybe you don’t want to drive 400 miles that day…..so…drive less…as long as you’re heading west, you’ll get there…did anyone say it had to be the fastest New York to California trip on record???
